For a complete AC charge, how many oz of R 134a (and other chemicals) are required in a 99 Honda Prelude?
I recently went to an Auto Repair Shop and asked them to install a heater blower and AC evaporator for me (I had the parts on hand already). They quoted me at $1300 to get the entire job done. I was like, hell no. I looked at the estimate and saw that they were assessing about $900 just to install the parts (citing 7.5 work hours at over $100 per hour)! I then saw that they required $200 in materials for the AC charge, like AC oil and R 134a, which is the modern replacement for freon in auto AC btw. Also they would charge another hour’s labor just for the recharge as well. Thing is, I looked on eBay and other sites, and apparently, I can charge the AC system myself without breaking any laws, and at the fraction of what they wanna gouge me for. I already installed the aforementioned parts myself. It did really take about 7.5 intense hours. But now, for the other $300 I can potentially save, I just do not know how much R 134a I should buy for the job. So, I’d appreciate some guidance.
Find the label under the hood for the A/C system. It is labeled under the hood. Yes you can fill it yourself, and buy the parts for around $40 to do it. The best way is to pull the system into a vacumn to make sure there are no leaks, and to eliminate the free air in the system so it doesn’t mix with your new freon and dilute it. That you need to have a shop do. Cheap way do it yourself and get moderate results. Problem is if the leak isn’t fixed you will loose the $40 in freon into the atmosphere(which is illegal)
